What brand of Router do you have. Most all routers have setup pages that are accessed from a web broswer. That is all of them I have ever worked with except the Apple routers that you need a special program to access them with. Spectrasonics omnisphere 2 v2 5 2.

I have two external hard drives attached to my 2012 Mac Mini running El Capitan. All has been OK for around 2 months. So open a web broswer, Safari, Firefox, Chrome (whichever you use), and type in the Address bar 192.168.1.1 (Which is the IP address of most all routers made) and hit the Enter/Return key. You will then get a Username and Password window. Type in the password for the router (if you don't know it it should be on a label on the side of the box or you can find out the default password by either a Google search or the user manual for that brand router) and again hit the Enter/Return key or Click OK/Login button.

Once you are in the setup pages of the router go to the advanced section (if there is one) and then something like Attached storage or something simailar. In there you willl have options to use the USB port for a external drive or maybe a printer. Set it to be used for a drive and a Name will be listed as how you access it.
